Minnehaha FWA for sale
I've just recently started fishing the Minnehaha FWA and really enjoy what all they have to offer. I've pulled several quality fish out of their and many of the lakes are bank fishing friendly. So the other day when I went to fish Cass Lake in the Southeast corner of the FWA, I was suprised to find a gate up with a sign that said Private Property. I double checked the map and made sure I was in the right place. I then called the DNR office at Minnehaha. The people their were friendly, but had no clue. They didn't even know the gate was up.
They told me to call back in a week or so and they may know more info then, but stay out of that area until I do know. So I Googled a land purchase of Minnehaha and found out the state doesn't own the FWA, they just lease it. The lease was up several years ago, but the mine which still operates in the area allowed the state to still use the property for the FWA, with a purchase offer of 99$. The state agreed to the offer (seemed pretty reasonable to me considering how much money the state has poured into the area with boat ramps, road upkeep, and land management) and everything looked good to go.
Enter Recession, mine now wants 80,000$ to offset their losses due to the current economic downturn. The state says no way they are paying that, and now bits and pieces of the property are being sold off one lake at a time.
Who suffers, the local fisherman who found some place to take his seven year old son to catch some fish. I don't know that all the facts in the above statement are true, this is just the conclusion I've reached doing the research. If anyone has any information about the land being sold to private investors, please let me know. I would like to have the facts straight before I write my congressman!

An up-date: Parts of the property are now closed. Other parts are still open to the public.
It's unfortunate that DNR and Peabody coal could not come up with a solution that might make everyone happy !

goes to show you just how much control we have on our resourses just look at geist its one of the best lakes around indy but no bank space and believe your tax dollars still pay for it anyway...
